Aistear should be seen as a playful methodology. Play is the way that all children learn about themselves, other people and their environment. After a decade of new research since the 1999 curriculum was introduced, we now know more than ever about how children learn. And surprise, surprise... it's not solely by teacher-led focused activities, but through play and exploration! Aistear should be a child-led methodology used to cover your curriculum objectives for the week/month. You can link your Aistear play to your topics by adding accessories/resources to match a theme or curriculum objective. Children should have the opportunity to choose for themselves how they play and interact with aistear areas. Children should always have the choice to run with a topic but should be allowed to do something else entirely.
