Creating an environment that oozes FUN.
Since I began really imbedding the Aistear themes into every aspect of my curriculum teaching my classroom layout has begun to change and reflects the fun, playful methodology. But I have always found that bright, colourful, clean and as clutter free as possible environments obviously work best with infants in particular. And you don’t have to be a creative genius to achieve such an environment. Before I tell you the biggest change I made to my room (which has worked FANTASTICALLY!) I will list off a few general ways to create a fun learning environment.
The biggest change I made this year… and much to the amusement of my colleagues was to get rid of as many tables as I could. It just struck me that it is empty space that the children need to play and explore. Also with my nice big rug and play areas for learning the only time the children need to be at the tables together was for writing activities and lunch. I did my research and was interested to learn that children actually don’t need as much table space as we think they do. Like most teachers I had two children for each table but soon realized that three children could sit comfortably at these tables for any writing activity and lunch. I was soon able to get rid of 6 small tables and the space I have gained for extra play areas has been amazing. The children are delighted and table space is no longer an issue. I strongly suggest you try this out!
