Love is in The Air!

Now and then, I raid my children's book collection looking for something for school! Frog in Love is a perfect love story for infants classes, and I'll be planning all my lessons around it this week. So, here's a few ideas I've put together...

SPHE

It links in perfectly with SPHE, exploring feelings, friendship and a touch of multiculturalism too! It turns out that Frog is in Love with Duck, and even Pig's declaration of a frog can't be in love with a duck. You're green and she's white is ignored because of course Frog doesn't let something so ridiculous as colour put him off!

Maths

Time: Thought the lovely simple illustrations you can cover your Maths language; words relating to time, morning, afternoon and evening. This is an area of language that infant children often find difficult. I will also be practising the lovely song below with the children, which covers the language of time too. We will record it and post it to our class blog on Wednesday for their grown-ups. 
​Measure: Measure how far you can frog jump in the classroom or in the PE lesson mentioned below using cubes. If you could get your hands on some frog hoppers, you could use them to have a frog hopping competition. Measure the distance with lolly sticks. ​

Literacy

Oral Language: The story covers plenty of antonyms/opposites for our language learning. 
Reading: We will re-read the story many times, but make sure the first time is read from start to finish without stopping, purely for enjoyment. We will also discuss the sequencing of the story, referring back to the language of 'time', I will also use our music video below to have the children re-tell the story in their own words. We will re-read the story spotting our tricky words too of course! 
Writing: For our writing, we will be scribing a simple note for our art activity mentioned below. As well as mark making and learning how to draw a love heart! Very important!

PE

Frog decides that to win the love of duck, he will impress her by breaking the world high jump record! He begins his training, jumping higher and higher into the sky each time... queue the Long Jump, Frog Jump for pe! I think this one is pretty self-explanatory!
For a warm-up you could make matching hearts of different colours (maths) the children wear the hearts around their neck. Set them off, Frog hopping around the hall to find their perfect match (i.e. the child with the matching coloured heart!) 

Art

The opportunities to integrate art lessons into this story are endless... making flowers, pictures, cards, paintings. We've already started the flowers below. Click on the image to see how they're made. Frog spend lot's time making cards, painting pictures for his love! 

Music

Every Wednesday morning to get us over the mid-week slump... we start the day by listening to a piece of fun music. The children are free to boogie on their own or with a friend or simply sit and listen. This week it will be...
